The World’s Finest Musicians Gathered Together

After the intermission, Rachmaninoff’s The Rock, Op. 7, made a strong impression, but it was Mikhail Pletnev’s Rachmaniana that attracted the greatest attention. Pletnev, founder of the Rachmaninoff International Orchestra and a conductor deeply attuned to Rachmaninoff’s world, presents the work as a sequence of eight compact pieces in a distinctly late-Romantic style. Rich in color, lyricism, and chromatic detail, the music evokes both Mahler and the emotional depth of Rachmaninoff’s own concertos.
